Title Note

Mary Black, who spent her early years performing and recording as part of the Black Family, released her eponymous solo debut in 1983. Laying a musical foundation for her succeeding work, the album marks the beginning of her longtime musical relationship with producer/guitarist Declan Sinott, and highlights her ability to mesh traditional and contemporary Irish music in one sweet package.

Black begins with an emotional "Rose of Allendale," followed by a bubbling, bouncy cover of John Sebastian's "Lovin' You." "Crusader," detailing the hopeful thoughts of the real-life Robin Davidson as she treks across the Australian desert to finally see the ocean, is as wide and sweeping as the saga it relates. Billie Holiday's signature "God Bless the Child" is sung against type, as a bluesy lullaby accompanied by simple guitar chords and a haunting saxophone. Though she had more intricate albums to come, MARY BLACK is a beautiful introduction to a solo career at its gently lyrical beginning.
