Publisher's note

The brother of the Motown legend shares his account of life with Marvin Gaye in this revealing, loving portrait of a music legend, his professional success, his turbulent personal life, and his tragic death.

Annotation

The patriarchal figure of Marvin Gaye, Sr., looms large over perhaps the definitive insider's view of the life of Marvin Gaye, Jr., in Frankie Gaye's MARVIN GAYE, MY BROTHER. Gaye, Sr., was both strictly religious and cold towards his family, and Frankie Gaye echoes suspicions voiced elsewhere that his father may have been homosexual. The simmering, decades-long tensions between father and famous son came to a head in 1984, when Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father. Frankie Gaye recounts finding his brother dying, and muses on the possibility that the singer may have bizarrely engineered his own murder. In addition, he tells of the experience of serving in Vietnam in the late 1960s while hit songs recorded by Marvin provided the musical soundtrack, and of his brother's increasingly despairing letters to him around that time about the plight of Marvin's singing partner, Tammi Terrell, who was dying from a brain tumor. Frankie's narrative records his family's increasing despair at Marvin's descent into drug-fuelled paranoia, and their futile efforts to calm relations between father and son in the days before the singer's murder. Often painfully candid, MY BROTHER is a poignant account of growing up in the shadow of a celebrated sibling.
