Martha Argerich has said that she does not like to be alone on stage, but prefers the company of friends. Here she is heard in two concerto performances from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the atmosphere could hardly be more congenial. The grand celebration of the Mozart C major Concerto K. 503 is life affirming, the piano made to dance and sing, the whole proceedings a perfect balance of freedom and control. The same equilibrium is evident in the Beethoven C major Concerto, with its soulful slow movement and finale hinting at a new kind of boisterousness. That Argerich has long favored the early Beethoven concertos over their later and bigger siblings should serve as a reminder that while she is thought of as one most likely to rip through the Liszt Sonata, she is also keenly attuned to the demands of Viennese classicism. She is, in fact, a complete musician, one of the greatest of our time.
