Review

Down Beat (p.61) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[Batiste's] modernism is well-grounded in standard form and laced with a sense of the unexpected..."
JazzTimes (p.92) - "Batiste's darkly mellow clarinet sound is beautifully displayed throughout but is especially glowing on his own 'Bumps'..."

Title Note

Personnel: Alvin Batiste (clarinet); Edward Perkins (vocals); Russell Malone (guitar); Branford Marsalis (saxophone); Lawrence Fields (piano); Ricardo Rodriguez (bass instrument); Herlin Riley (drums).

A highly respected though oft-overlooked jazz clarinet player, Alvin Batiste is the subject of this 2007 installment in the MARSALIS MUSIC HONORS series. While the New Orleans-based musician leans toward the avant-garde (certainly more so than a Marsalis brothers-related project would imply), he also excels at more straight-ahead pieces, and Batiste's deft balance between the two is well represented on this excellent 10-song set, which, not surprisingly, features saxophonist and producer Branford Marsalis.
