What can be said about this disc? Assuming you know who Maria Callas was and what her most famous roles were, you will see that nearly all the best of them are represented here, her Norma, her Lucia, her Violetta, her Tosca, her somewhat controversial Carmen, all heard in excerpts from the complete opera recordings she made in her prime for EMI. If you do not know who Maria Callas was, suffice it to say she was the greatest diva of her time, 'La divina' to the mob at La Scala, and a singing actress capable of the most astonishing emotional identification with her roles. In many ways she really was Floria Tosca, beautiful, stylish, self-absorbed and maddeningly insecure until that moment when, thrust into the center of the drama, she became galvanized, courageous and invincible. And suffice it to say there has not been anything approaching her like on an opera stage since her departure, so perhaps this disc would make a sound investment.
