This multi-tiered documentary explores the life of Margaret Garner, the American slave who inspired Toni Morrison's novel BELOVED. Here the story follows not only the tragic life of Garner, but the production of an opera based on her life. The film interweaves historical narrative along with examinations of contemporary issues involving race, using the production of the opera as a focal point. MARGARET GARNER is an interesting and devastating portrait of an American tragedy.
