Title Note

Audio Mixer: Matt Mehlan.

Recording information: Mad Dog Studios, Schaumburg, IL.

The debut by Champaign-Urbana's peculiarly named Everybody Uh-Oh mixes the trippy sensibilities of the neo-psychedelicists in the Elephant 6 stable with a big dollop of both slowcore coolness and Yo La Tengo/My Bloody Valentine-style sounds for sound's sake. The resulting blend is refreshingly free of both the narcotic drudgery of most slowcore and the "look ma, no hands" frantic quality that the lesser lights in the E6 collective sometimes show off. The closest comparison is the Shins, but frontman Jeremy Keller lacks James Mercer's way with a melody; although these ten songs are intriguing and sometimes fascinating listening, the only really catchy tune is the ironically peppy "Champaign's Too Bright." Other than that pop song highlight, the best tracks are extended soundscapes like "Eunice" and "The Long Band," which unfold slowly, exploring sounds and moods that shift incrementally in the best psychedelic tradition. Man Am I Brad is one of those albums that works best as a whole; its 43 minutes pass by almost like one extended piece. Fans of American Analog Set or the Lassie Foundation will be intrigued. ~ Stewart Mason
