Malevolent Grain (Vinyl)

Conceived by brothers Nathan and Aaron Weaver during a protest for the radical environmental group Earth First!, Olympia, Washington-based Wolves in the Throne Room merge Cascadian eco-spiritual consciousness with the misanthropic tropes of Scandinavian metal, a sound the band describes as "transformative black metal." Rehearsing and recording at a converted farm dubbed Calliope, the group released the haunting DIADEM OF 12 STARS (2006), eventually signing with vanguard metal label Southern Lord. Extensive touring was followed by a relationship with producer/engineer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth), yielding two acclaimed full-lengths, TWO HUNTERS (2007) and BLACK CASCADE (2009).

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, it's no surprise that Wolves in the Throne Room have a more environmentally-focused viewpoint than your average black metal band. Using the harsh, rain-soaked soundscapes of traditional Norwegian black metal as a jumping off point, the band has created a world of noise that encompasses all that's dark and dangerous about the natural world even as it's unspeakably beautiful. Their MALEVOLENT GRAIN EP features two tracks that display that dichotomy between the gentle and the fearsome presented by raw Mother Nature. First track "The Looming Resonance" is pushed into realms of magic by the ethereal vocals of Jamie Myers, rising above the band's foreboding music on fairy wings. "Hate Crystal" follows it up with a menacing sound more easily identified as black metal. Clocking in at over 10 minutes, it's an epic journey into the heart of darkness.
