Indian-born percussionist Zakir Hussain has made major contributions to the musical canon in two distinct realms. As a recognized master of the tabla, he has kept the fires of Indian classical music alive in his home country; and as a prolific ambassador of "world music," Hussain has played with a globe-spanning array of important artists, including Mickey Hart, the Beatles, Ravi Shankar, and Tito Puente. The dynamic performer is the son of Ustad Alla Rakha, himself a revered tabla master, and has been playing professionally since his early teens in the 1960s. Additionally, Hussain has composed film scores, acted onscreen, and mentored a number of younger percussionists.
