Review

Alternative Press (8/02, p.76) - 7 out of 10 - "...A follow-up to the much touted ONCE WE WERE TREES, this six-song EP solidifies the Sparks' rep as alt-country stars."
CMJ (6/3/02, p.12) - "...A beautiful sounding record..."
Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.104) - "...A choice blend of traditional influences and forward-looking musicality..."
NME (Magazine) (6/29/02, p.37) - 8 out of 10 - "...A fine example of what great work can come from doing inappropriate things with traditional music..."

Title Note

Beachwood Sparks includes: Chris Gunst (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica); Brent Rademaker (vocals, keyboards, bass); Dave Scher (vocals, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, organ); Jimmy Hay (drums).

Additional personnel: Ben Knight (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mia Doi Todd (vocals); Paul Larson (acoustic guitar); Jimmy Tamborello.

Recorded at Lifelike Studios, Los Angeles, California in February 2002.

The first EP by dream country rockers Beachwood Sparks emphasizes the more hazily psychedelic side of the updated late-Byrds formula they perfected on their two previous full-lengths. With thicker organs, tape manipulation, odder song structures, and lush tremoloes framing their trademark pedal steel and McGuinn guitar arpeggios, MAKE THE COWBOY ROBOTS CRY focuses largely on languid, sleepy lullabies. "Hibernation" and "Ponce de Leon Blues" barely move the VU needle, but provide peaceful comedowns for a Laurel Canyon-themed afterparty. The EP marks the return of original drummer Jimmy Hey to the fold, who makes his energetic presence felt in the lead-off track, "Drinkswater," and the groovy, Sir Douglas Quintet-like closer, "Ghost Dance 1492." With a winsome tone underpinning the six tracks, the EP reads somewhat like a post-mortem and marked the band's last release before a long hiatus.
