Rolling Stone (10/31/02, p.140) - Ranked # 50 in Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums"
Rolling Stone (2/17/00, p.53) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...comprises [Aimee Mann's] most creative, catchy work....shrewdly observed, ornately rendered pop miniatures that triumph within and beyond Anderson's acutely emotional epic....the perfect pop soundtrack..."
Spin (1/01, p.73) - Ranked #12 in Spin's "Top 20 Albums of the Year [2000]" - "...Precision-strike, perfectly realized emotions....the perfect kiss-off to a clueless record industry that's kicked her around for years..."
Entertainment Weekly (12/24/99, p.152) - Included in EW's "Best of 1999" - "...a cohesive assortment of Mann tunes, new and obscure, whose weary narrators are as battered but undiminished as the battery of losers in [director, P.T.] Anderson's unashamedly emotional epic."
Q (5/00, p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The quality of these songs...suggests a major talent has been overlooked. Strangely, 2 Supertramp hits are also featured. Stranger still, they sound fantastic."
CMJ (2/14/00, p.19) - "...Mann's startling honesty and keen dissection and analysis of emotion...makes this material memorable and moving."
Mojo (Publisher) (4/00, p.102) - "...Happily, away from the movie the songs work beautifully on their own, with Mann emerging as an even more hopeless romantic than she was on her 1st two solo albums....Mann is a great tunesmith and MAGNOLIA has finally given her a platform on which to prove it to the world."

The stars have never seemed entirely aligned for Aimee Mann. The brilliant Boston singer/songwriter with an ear for enticingly sweet hooks and somber, reflective lyrics was constantly overlooked and underappreciated throughout the '90s as she released two quietly heralded pop records. To make matters worse, she ended the decade with a wealth of material and suddenly no label on which to release it all. Thankfully, Aimee has friends like filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, who catapulted to celebrity with 1997's surprise critical hit BOOGIE NIGHTS. For his follow-up, MAGNOLIA, whose tone he has credited in part to listening to hours of Aimee's songs, he has tapped this muse to provide the musical backdrop.

She opens with a stark rendition of the Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One," which becomes pure, delicate simple beauty in her hands. She proceeds to softly belt out eight more tracks of blissful understatement, including the haunting highlights "Build That Wall" and "Driving Sideways." MAGNOLIA is fleshed out by a couple of '70s Supertramp AM staples, an underrated early-'90s dance nugget by Gabrielle, and score material from Jon Brion. The only thing lacking here is more Aimee Mann.
