Review

Q (4/00, p.111) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...a boisterous Bally Sagoo production heavy on bass and synthesised sounds. The opening 'Kinna Sohna' is possibly the last word in qawwali-funk, while the softer tracks...hold up well..."
CMJ (5/00, p.24) - "...Spanning dub, drum'n'bass, syrupy soul and hyper-kinetic techno....a delightful asterisk to an extraordinary life's work. An you can dance to it."

Product note

Personnel includes: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals).
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the greatest qawwali singer of his generation, and extremely well versed in this devotional style of music that originated with 10th century renegade Sufi poets and musicians. However, Nusrat also recognized that music was an evolutionary art form.
MAGIC TOUCH represents the singer's attempts to blend the music of his ancient homeland with modern technology. This album is a prime example of the legendary singer's fusion of the traditional and the modern, a classic meeting of East and West. Seeking to open up qawwali music to outside influences, Nusrat enlisted Bally Sagoo, a renowned DJ, producer and remixer. The result is a highly experimental and innovative release, with Sagoo's electronic soundscapes providing the canvas for Nusrat's vocal portraits. Essentially, this music is advanced house music; and of course, Nusrat's intricate, largely improvisational singing style makes for a compelling listen. Highlights include " Kinna Sohna," and "Dum Dum Ali Ali."
