Andreas Vollenweider's work cannot be classified as either classical or folk. Instead, he is a trailblazer in New Age and contemporary pop. This 2005 compilation features many of the harpist's finest recorded moments, spanning some three decades. His harp is featured throughout, though guest singers Milton Nascimento, Patti Austin, and others add variety to the otherwise all instrumental track list.
"Moon Dance" opens the set. Not to be confused with the Van Morrison song, this selection blends syllabic singing with lush harp arpeggios and a relaxed drum groove. Another piece, "Pearls & Tears," is more distant and airy. But despite the title, this song remains uplifting and joyous. Culled from a live appearance in Tokyo, "Moonday" closes MAGIC HARP. On this track, a funky drum beat combines with jazzy chords to create a slick patina of sound. Overall, this release emphasizes Vollenweider's distinctive musicianship and imaginative songwriting. The companion DVD features three videos and some rare live footage.
