If there was any doubt that Patti Labelle's talents demand respect from a pop audience that immediately associates the term diva with Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey, LOVE SONGS more than rectifies this oversight. This mix of solo material and Labelle songs is a fantastic example of this Philadelphia native's impressive range.

Among the stylistic pit-stops she makes are with the red-hot Latin music of "Teach Me Tonight (Me Gusta Tu Baile)" with Sheila E. and Willie Colon, the Chic-worthy funk of "Joy to Have Your Love," and the roof-raising gospel of "Quiet Time" featuring the Jonny Land Singers. Other notable solo turns include the sanctified vocal workout "I Think About You," and the lush Allen Toussaint-produced "Love Has Finally Come." Equally impressive are group collaborations with Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx. Whether it's Patti flexing her three-and-a-half octave range on the slinky soul of "Come Into My Life," backing Laura Nyro on the gorgeous doo-wop of "The Bells," or strutting throughout the sassy "Lady Marmalade," LOVE SONGS is a diva-licious meal.
