Often called the ?Chanteuse of Chant? by her fans, Deva Premal is a ubiquitous presence in yoga studios and spiritual centers across the globe. LOVE IS SPACE, the second release from Premal and her life-partner Miten, is a luscious treat of soothing vocals, surprising rhythms, and superb production. The couple met at an ashram in India so it is no surprise that all the tracks on LOVE IS SPACE are traditional mantras and Hindu chants. What makes Premal stand out among the growing field of chant music is her unique voice and Miten?s studio expertise. ?Om Shree Sache ? is a mantra usually chanted in a monotone with little thought to performance. Premal and Miten chose to record it like a great vocalist might, with breathy phrasing and unusual stresses swirling in atmosphere and the sound of a subtle rain stick. These liberties are exactly what make Premal so popular?and shocking. Traditionalists may find Premal?s adaptations scandalous, but most are won over by final result: reverent, beautiful music that holds true to the intent of the mantras. This music is excellent for yoga, meditation, and healing work in addition to listening for pleasure.
