Akron/Family Artist Snapshot:

Based on surface signifiers and the band's laid-back, improvisational approach to songs, the casual observer might semi-accurately file Akron/Family under "freak folk," but the Brooklyn ensemble also has a grander sensibility--fusing acoustic guitars, electronica, multiple-part harmonies, and lilting, surprisingly poppy choruses that recall an even trippier PET SOUNDS. Further, the band's live shows are energetic three-ring psychedelic circuses, belying any accusation of hippie lassitude. Signed to Michael Gira's Young God label since 2005, the prolific musicians have also self-released live albums, solo projects, and alternate versions of their songs.

Review

Magnet (p.90) - "Akron/Family mixes unhinged enthusiasm with an almost shocking level of musicianship, most notably on seven-minute-plus epics 'Ed Is A Portal' and 'There's So Many Colors'...."
The Wire (p.71) - "[With] the joyous singalong harmonies of 'Don't Be Afraid, You're Already Dead,' the jaws harp swamp disco stomp of 'Ed Is A Portal' and the chanting, fuzz drench and banjo segues of the 'There's So Many Colors'..."

Title Note

The beauty of Akron/Family's sound is their ability to jump between disparate styles at a moment's notice, and sometimes to combine them all into one. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the New York-based band's third album (not counting a collaboration with Angels of Light). The band darts rapidly from "All You Need is Love"-like hippie sing-along anthems to free-form freakouts, from delicate folkie ballads to churning, tribal rhythms. Somehow it all hangs together, due partly to the sheer musicianship and partly to the band's ambitious artistic vision. LOVE IS SIMPLE is ultimately powered by an inclusive, open-hearted feel that might not feel too foreign to admirers of, say, the Grateful Dead's late-'60s output.
