Former Boomtown Rat songwriter and vocalist Bob Geldof emerged as one of the most well known pop personalities of his era. Shocked by the horrific famine that was plaguing Ethiopia in 1984, Geldof organized the Band Aid charity record, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which sold in excess of three million copies, and then '85's mammoth Live Aid extravaganza, which was broadcast to a worldwide television audience of over 1,000,000,000. After receiving a knighthood in '86, he released some solo albums, but is best known for his charitable work with both Live Aid and its 2005 follw-up, Live 8.
