On paper, it's unlikely that one of rock's greatest singers ever, who fronted one of the biggest mainstream bands of the 1970s and 1980s, would take a detour into the world of Christian rock. But that's just what Lou Gramm did in 2009 with his new group and its self-titled album, The Lou Gramm Band. It's his first "solo" effort since 1989's Long Hard Look. The album rocks convincingly, and the lyrics vividly reflect his born-again Christian faith. It's a miracle that the ex-Foreigner vocalist lived to reach this point. After surviving surgery to remove a benign brain tumor in 1997, he struggled to regain his health and his voice. He left Foreigner for the second time in 2002 and eased back into performing with his own band, which now includes two of his brothers, bass guitarist Richard Gramm and drummer Ben Gramm, as well as guitarist Don Mancuso and keyboardist Andy Knoll. According to the liner notes, the band originally planned to just "re-record spiritual classics." The focus shifted to strong original material although two interesting covers remain: Billy Preston's "That's the Way God Planned It" and the Parliaments' "(I Wanna) Testify." Sonically, The Lou Gramm Band has some production flourishes, but it's mostly no-nonsense and straightforward. The best originals are "Made to Be Broken," "Willing to Forgive," "Baptized by Fire," "Single Vision," and "Rattle Yer Bones." "Single Vision" includes a bridge lyric that has Lou jumping from merely faithful to political: "Don't take our Lord from the classrooms/Please let us say our prayers of thanks/And when we pledge to our country/I know that without him, we would never be free." "Rattle Yer Bones" has the strongest Foreigner vibe, and it wouldn't have been out of place 30 years before on Head Games. Truth be told, Lou's voice isn't what it used to be, and sometimes on The Lou Gramm Band he strains to reach notes he hit effortlessly in the past, but that's to be expected given the natural toll of aging and the effects of his health battles. It still has power, and a less than prime Lou Gramm is light years ahead of most others. Few "classic rock" singers have come close to sustaining their vocal abilities over the decades, even without fighting a life-threatening illness. The Lou Gramm Band proves that inspired music can still emerge when the spirit is willing but the flesh is (slightly) weak. ~ Bret Adams

The long awaited return of one of Rocks greatest voices is finally over. Lou Gramm the legendary singer whos career of hit songs span over thirty years has just released his newest CD titled `The Lou Gramm Band. Its a different departure for Lou because its his first step into the world of Christian Rock. If this CD is any indication of which way he should move then this was a step in the right direction. The music stays true to Lous heart and his messages inside stay true to his soul. Fans that have followed his career will be very pleased with this CD and hes sure to make new ones in the Christian community. The band consists of some of the best musicians out there today including Don Mancuso on Guitar, Andy Knoll On Keyboards, Ben Gramm on Drums, Richard Gramm on Bass and the legend himself Lou Gramm on vocals. "Made To Be Broken" is a hard rocking song driven by amazing guitar riffs, wonderful keyboard play and excellent melodies. Its a story about someone fighting with the inner struggles of everyday life. It tells the tale of that person asking for guidance to get them to the right path. "Reedemer" is a Blues song with a lot of keyboards in it. Theres a nice guitar solo both electric and acoustic halfway through this song. It tells a story about someone that is giving advice based on their own circumstances. Once you hear the song youll find yourself singing the title over and over again because the hook is so mesmerizing. "Willing To Forgive" is a song that begins with amazing acoustic guitar work to wake up your senses. Then Lous legendary voice kicks in and away you go. The chorus is amazing and youll be singing right along with Lou and the guys. The music makes you think of sunny days sitting by the lake and just enjoying life. It tells the tale of someone who has made mistakes and is thankful for forgiveness. "Baptised By Fire" is a hard rocking song showcasing Lous amazing vocal styling that should be cranked all the way up. Its a song that can and should be played on todays radio. The guitar riffs, pounding drums, keyboard play and overall energy grabs a hold of you and wont let go. "So Great" is another energetic song that once again showcases Lous hard rocking voice. The music features more amazing guitar work done masterfully by Don Mancuso. The chorus is catchy as well as hypnotic. It also features the Heavenly voices of Lous children reciting a prayer. The title says it all. "Single Vision" is a true example of why Lou has made so many hits using his God given talents. His voice brings a smile to your face while youre listening to the chorus and wonderful lyrics of this song. The song sends a message to everyone that we need to become one with our brothers and our sisters. It also asks the question when did we stop giving thanks back to our creator. "You Saved Me" is easily the most romantic and enchanting song on this CD. Lous voice echos throughout each line giving you a little taste into his soul. His voice has never been stronger and the message he is sending is crystal clear. The music is again well done and adds a beautiful element to this gem. Thank you for this song. By John J.
