Title Note

This album was recorded in 1974 for the Rocket label and turned down, allegedly because it was "too experimental." The master tapes remained on the shelf until 2003. There are two surprising elements here. First, Casablanca was not a band of unknown youngsters. Lead singer Aliki Ashman had been part of Ginger Baker's Air Force, while percussionist Eddie Capone and drummer Charlie Charles had played with Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come. But more importantly, The Lost Funk presents a well-executed but fairly mainstream form of funk -- nothing here to scare off label executives. Casablanca combines a solid funk rhythm section with a soulful approach. The music stands closer to Stevie Wonder than Funkadelic -- in fact, "Colours" sounds downright derivative of Wonder circa Innervisions -- with a clear intention to make it to the dancefloor. The lyrics are not all brilliant ("Invitation" is awful), but "Ain't No War" and "Funky Opposition" let out an interesting humanitarian message. All the songs are original compositions, with the exception of a rendition of "Do It Again," a bit too straightforward to be noteworthy. The best tracks are hard-knocking ones like "Funky Opposition," "Get It Good," and "Living." The master tapes show their age and haven't been thoroughly cleaned up; the right stereo channel sounds muffled in a couple of songs and "Country Funkin" appears to be affected by speed variations. But all in all, this is a nice set of recordings that deserved to see the light of day back in 1974. Now it sounds a bit dated, but it still has its enjoyable moments. ~ Fran‡ois Couture
