Neil Young's long-time backing band, Crazy Horse, recorded their own masterpiece in 1971. And while 1972's LOOSE doesn't swing with quite the same abandon as the band's classic self-titled debut, there is still much to dig about this second studio release. The band lost guitarist Danny Whitten to a drug overdose shortly before recording the album (Jack Nitzsche and Nils Lofgren also jumped ship), and although his absence is clearly felt, LOOSE still contains numerous examples of why Crazy Horse became the outfit that Young would turn to for decades to come. The band's ragged grooves and Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina's classic rhythmic interplay can be heard on tracks like "One Sided Love" and "Move," while the mellow "One Thing I Love" and even lazier "And She Won't Even Blow Smoke in My Direction" are classic Laurel Canyon country tunes. Long out of print, and appearing on CD for the first time in 2006, it's nice to have this genial classic-rock gem back again.
