Since the term was first coined in the 1950s, the abbreviation for disc jockey has gained new dimensions of meaning. DJs have evolved from mere turntable operators and announcers of radio hits into artists in their own right, responsible in large part for the advent of the 1970s disco craze and for the later rise of hip-hop. LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT BEAT, Kurt B. Reighley's informative and thoughtful guide to the world of the DJ, spans the post-Second World War rise of Jamaican sound systems and hip-hop's early-'70s birth in Brooklyn at the hands of Kingston, Jamaica-born Clive Campbell, otherwise known as Kool Herc. Interviews with a large cross-section of the DJ community portray the history of DJing, with profiles of many of its legendary exponents, like hip-hop guru Afrika Bambaataa, the groundbreaking 1980s disco DJ Larry Levan, and British house and trance DJ Paul Oakenfold: the latter mastered his trade at Levan's New York club Paradise Garage and went on to influence a whole new generation of DJs. A valuable and insightful study, LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT BEAT reveals a community of musically and technically savvy artists working in a largely unexplored yet richly creative profession.
