Junior Brown Artist Snapshot:

The missing link between the raw Bakersfield sound of vintage Merle Haggard and Buck Owens and the rougher, punk-influenced alt-country bands, Junior Brown is a unique blend of tradition and innovation. Born Jamieson Brown in Kirksville, Indiana, on June 12, 1952, Brown is a former university music professor whose self-invented instrument, the guit-steel, is a two-necked hybrid of a standard electric guitar and a lap steel. Although Brown had been playing music professionally since his teens, his solo career started with two 1993 albums, 12 SHADES OF BROWN and GUIT WITH IT. His most commercially successful release was 1996's SEMI-CRAZY.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (9/4/98, p.85) - "Brown's fourth album marks the first time the radical-traditionalist Texan honky-tonker has made a record as out-there as his talent merits. BACK is Brown's most enjoyable long player to date..." - Rating: A-
Q (3/99, p.93) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...LONG WALK BACK mixes traditional country, blues, rockabilly and swing in a riveting cocktail which is rattled out on the frenetic finger-picking steel and acoustic guitar and the tumbleweed and tombstone vocals which pay unmistakable homage to Johnny Cash..."

Title Note

Engineers: Rick Will, Chuck Ainlay, Will Schillinger.

In between the glitz of bootscooters like Brooks & Dunn and the high lonesome warble of Iris DeMent walks Austin iconoclast Junior Brown. On LONG WALK BACK, Brown continues using his custom-made guit-steel (a double-neck electric & steel guitar) on yet another batch of twangy trad-country tunes that stand out in a modern-day Nashville where bared navels and Aerosmith covers are the norm. Having penned all but two songs, this collection showcases Brown's deep rumble of a voice alongside his enthralling finger-picking. The instrumental "Peelin' Taters" finds his guitar buzzing like a bee whereas the sad laments "Read 'Em And Weep" and "Just A Little Love" show off Brown's obvious debt to fellow Texan George Jones.

Our hero also delves deep into the kitschy catalog of Elvis Presley film music for a swinging version of "Rock-A-Hula Baby" that is perfectly complemented by a tight country-pop treatment of Connie Francis' "Lookin' For Love" complete with a passel of perky background singers. The nearly nine-minute "Stupid Blues" finds Brown twisting blues cliches and playing with drummer Mitch Mitchell, an obvious link to the guitarist's hero Jimi Hendrix.
