Loney, Dear Artist Snapshot:

Swedish singer-songwriter Loney, Dear--real name Emil Svanangen--signed with the U.S. indie label Sub Pop in late 2006 after a CD-R of his homemade recordings fell into the hands of an employee at the label. If that sounds familiar, it should be. The same once-in-a-lifetime opportunity also occurred for Svanangen's fellow Swede Jens Lekman. The two also share a melancholy, folky pop sensibility that has invited comparisons to Brian Wilson, Jose Gonzalez, and U.S. wunderkind Sufjan Stevens. The increased exposure of Loney, Dear's Sub Pop debut, 2007s LONEY NOIR, led to the album being licensed in the U.K. by the major label Parlophone. Svanangen played all the instruments on every song on the album.

Review

Q (p.125) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Deceptively understated, as on 'I Am John', things build from acoustic beginnings to an uplifting climax of xylophone, parping bass and soaring, multi-layered vocals."
CMJ (p.41) - "By changing up tempos and keeping a dizzying dissonance between his lyrical and musical content, Svanagen keeps his effervescent album bright, inviting and free from mournful singer/songwriter-isms."

Title Note

The brainchild of Emil Svanangen from Jonkoping, Sweden, Loney, Dear realized the dream of basement pop prodigies everywhere when his own home-recorded mp3s propelled him from blogosphere discussion thread to a contract with Sub Pop. With his debut, LONEY, NOIR, it is easy to see why the label was impressed. Loney, Dear reimagines twee pop with elevated Van Dyke Parks-style sophistication that is simultaneously homespun and orchestral. Svanangen's instantly memorable melodies are also the perfect vehicle for his impossibly high alto.
