New Orleans native trumpeter Kermit Ruffins is fiercely dedicated to the musical heritage of his hometown, but don't peg him for a nostalgia act. True, he does maintain the Orleans brass band and jazz traditions, but not in any kind of stuffy or old-fashioned way. "Treme Mardi Gras" features a foray into hip-hop (courtesy of the rap by Baby Jaye), and Ruffins gives the Crescent City treatment to tunes by the Isley Brothers and Horace Silver. Of course, the man's horn shines and crackles joyfully throughout.
