Title Note

Levon Helm & The RCO All-Stars: Paul Butterfield (vocals, harmonica); Mac Rebennack (vocals, keyboard); Levon Helm (vocals, drums); Fred Carter Jr., Steve Cropper (guitar); Lou Marini (saxophone); Alan Rubin (trumpet); Tom "Bones" Malone (trombone); Howard Johnson (tuba); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass guitar).

Recorded on New Year's Day, 1977 at the now-vanished Palladium in New York, this set from the legendary Band drummer Levon Helm together with equally well-known fellow musicians like Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, and Steve Cropper is like a hype-free version of THE LAST WALTZ. Songs from the band's eponymous (and deleted) mid-'70s album like "Milk Cow Boogie" and "Rain Down Tears," the latter including Butterfield's ghostly harmonica, are interspersed with the Band favorite "Ophelia" and classics like "Sing Sing Sing" and "Got My Mojo Working." The performances are uniformly stellar, the band rocks and rolls in all the right places, and Helm is in fine voice throughout.

Album Review

Levon Helm Studios has dug deep into the archives to deliver a timeless classic in this Live RCO All-Stars album. After fire destroyed Levon Helm's studio and home in the early nineties, the tape room in the basement managed to protect the fragile contents within. This disc features mixed and mastered cuts from the original tape sanctified by the fire, from an absolutely smoking New Years Eve performance at the legendary Palladium in New York City 1977. Levon put together a dynamic selection of rock and roll and R&B performers to make up this aptly named all-star band for his first project after the Band. Members include: Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn from the M.G.'s, New Orleans great Dr. John, harmonica master Paul Butterfield, Fred Carter Jr. trading great licks with Cropper, and the great horn section of Tom "Bones Malone, Alan Rubin and Howard Johnson. The album is a mix of searing rhythm and blues numbers with Levon's Arkansas twang and backbeat that begs to be played loud. Levon brings to this band an air of humility that stemmed form his early days in the Band, when each member contributed to the song, played less solos and more great fills to carry the singers and the song. Rarely do so many musicians of such a high caliber get together; and an all-star ensemble that can truly play as a band is nearly an endangered species. This is classic American music. With the recent releases of the Midnight Ramble Sessions cd/dvd packages featuring Levon Helm live from his studio, the timing of this release will build upon the great media coverage already generated and continuing to grow from these ongoing shows. Guest appearances on The Don Imus show on MSNBC, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, Nightline, The New York Times press articles and a role in Tommy Lee Jones award winning new movie The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada have only boosted the recent media attention. Dr. John exclaims, "it's gonna be great in 78", and this is a night to remember. Look for future live releases from the vault at Levon Helm Studios. Digipak.
