Review

NME (Magazine) (5/31/97, p.56) - "...Bittersweet and bruised, bleakly comic but stoic in the face of endless everyday calamity, LIVE ON TOUR is a testament to both Prine's impassioned performances and continuing resilience."

Title Note

LIVE ON TOUR is a live album with three new studio tracks.

Personnel: John Prine (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Jorgenson (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, banjo); Pat McLaughlin (acoustic guitar); David Steele, Larry Crane, Jason Wilbur (electric guitar, background vocals); Jack Holder (electric guitar); Robbie Turner (steel guitar); Phil Parlapiano (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards, background vocals); Benmont Tench (piano, keyboards); David Jacques (upright & electric basses); Sam Shoup, Howie Epstein (bass); Steve Mergan (drums); Ed Gauss, Joe Romersa (drums, percussion); Gary Belz, Al Bunetta, Keith Sykes (background vocals).

Producers: John Prine, Dan Einstein, Howie Epstein.

All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.

LIVE ON TOUR was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Prine's imaginatively titled second live album shows that the years have not diminished the performing or compositional abilities of this seminal singer-songwriter. LIVE ON TOUR covers the span of his twenty-five year recording career, from early classics like the pot-smokers anthem "Illegal Smile" and the Dylanesque "The Late John Garfield Blues" to ‘90s material like the wry "Quit Hollerin' At Me."

Backed by a crack band, Prine essays the kind of easy-going charm that has made his blend of country, folk and rock come across so well for so long. Prine has the gift of simplicity, coupled with the ability to turn a phrase like nobody's business. This combination makes his heartfelt, often humorous songs powerful without being overbearing.
