Review

Rolling Stone (2/18/99, pp.61-62) - "...throws a crisp, unforgiving light on Brooke. She withstands the bright focus, though...pure folk clarity cut with pure rock opacity..."
Entertainment Weekly (4/2/99, p.95) - "...Covering tunes from her days as half of the coeds-with-mesmerizing-harmonies duo The Story to 1997's sumptous, catchy 10 CENT WINGS, LIVE showcases Brooke's mounful-edged voice and intimate songs." - Rating: B+

Title Note

Personnel: Jonatha Brooke (vocals, guitar, bass); Duke Levine, Gerry Leonard (guitar); Gerri Sutyak (cello); Ingrid Graudins (keyboards, background vocals); Nick D'Virgilio (bass, drums, dumbek, background vocals); Mike Rivard (bass); Tom Hambridge, Brian Blade (drums).

"Wow, you know it's that kind of night, anything can happen," says Jonatha Brooke near the beginning of this recording of her summer '98 concert performances. And indeed, when the songs get going, Ms. Brooke does spin a bit of magic. Her mournful voice is part ancient Celt and part 21st century angst. Yet she does not subscribe to the "fashion of disdain" she discerns in "Is This All." She has a burning, "twisted compassion," as she sings in/to "Annie," to bridge unbridgeable gaps in relationships of varying intimacy.

Preternaturally aware of life's precarious balancing act between memory and desire, Brooke lives in that stillpoint. In her allusions to fairy tales and T.S. Eliot and her cover of the traditional "In The Gloaming," one can sense her old soul's connection with history, both real and imagined. This live album has a lush ambience, a bit of edge, insight and passion.
