One of Brazil's best-loved performers, Jorge Ben Jor is not only a commendable songwriter but also a fine guitarist and singer. His most famous tune is probably the much-covered "Mas Que Nada." Blending elements of rock and blues, disco grooves and hip harmonic changes, Ben Jor is a truly unique musician and conceptualist.

This 1992 live concert features 11 generally upbeat pop-inflected tracks. "Tropical Country (Pais Tropical) Spiro Giro" has an uptempo reggae feel. In contrast, "How Wonderful (Que Maravilha)" is a slow, jazzy ballad that features a superb electric bass solo. "Ivory Coast (Costa Do Marfim)" has a perfectly executed lazy funk feel, and "Space Man (Homem Do Espaco)" uses a kind of South African vocal call-and-response a la Miriam Makeba. An exciting listen, filled with many superb musical moments--both vocally and instrumentally--LIVE IN RIO is a fine addition to anybody's collection of seminal Brazilian pop albums.
