Review

Rolling Stone (4/29/99, p.70) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...blending improvisation, psychedelia, funk, country and metal into a perverse, original sound and presenting it all with plenty of punk rock..."
Entertainment Weekly (3/26/99, p.87) - "...Part ZZ Top on peyote, part Grateful Dead on steroids, the guitar-driven trio's eccentric genius emerges on [this] souped-up release..." - Rating: B
NME (Magazine) (4/17/99, p.37) - 7 out of 10 - "...charismatically honest document of the live experience...charming...

Title Note

Meat Puppets: Curt Kirkwood (vocals, guitar); Cris Kirkwood (bass, background vocals); Derrick Bostrom (drums).

Recorded live at the Sundance Club, Bozeman, Montana on December 7, 1988 and the Top Hat Club, Missoula, Montana on December 8, 1988.

By the time they emerged from indie-rock purgatory in the early '90s, the Meat Puppets had established a well-deserved reputation as one of the most frenetic, intense live acts in the business. The brothers Kirkwood were always ahead of the curve, spinning their hair in tandem long before the hair-metal genre even existed. Indeed, there was always something a bit tongue-in-cheek about this Arizona trio, and moments of goofy humor are plentiful. Check out the wacky whistle-fest that is "Maiden's Milk." They render it here in double time--just try whistling along. But along with humorously overwrought Black Sabbath covers, it is clear that the band is seriously talented.

Those who were lucky enough to have witnessed the live Puppets will surely appreciate this fine document, and those who didn't will understand what the fuss was all about. The set covers a wide span of their career. It veers from primal, mid-period rockers like "Automatic Mojo" and "Liquefied" to their peculiar brand of slightly disturbed-sounding country music ("Plateau" and "Lake of Fire"). These renditions provide an interesting counterpart to the versions on Nirvana's UNPLUGGED. The disc also includes a few non-LP oddities.
