Erstwhile Big Star frontman Alex Chilton's notoriously eccentric, erratic solo career can be intimidating to navigate, but this live album presents as accessible a snapshot of his work as one could want. LIVE IN ANVERS finds Chilton playing a Belgian gig in 2004 and plowing through everything from original tunes like "Bangkok" to an eclectic batch of covers including Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose's '70s soul nugget "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now" and Wilson Pickett's "634-5789." As wide-ranging as the set list may be, Chilton offers energetic and straightforward performances throughout, making it easy to both appreciate and understand the rock & roll journeyman's charms.
