In 2007, Willie Nelson collaborated with fellow country veterans Merle Haggard and Ray Price for the sadly all too true-titled THE LAST OF THE BREED. A heartfelt but surprisingly vital piece of work from these three old honky-tonkers (Price was entering his 80s at the time), this was followed by an old-time revue tour that featured all three singers, backed by the equally wizened western swing orchestra Asleep at the Wheel. A loose, good-time feel pervades the set, with all three singers in fine, clear voice throughout. Particular highlights include Price's tearjerking ballad "Make the World Go Away," a scrappy take on Hag's anthem "Mama Tried," and a sweet duet of Nelson and Haggard on "Pancho and Lefty."
