Annotation

The story is being told by an old fish to her children and grandchildren about a Little Black Fish who, tired and dissatisfied with his life without any purpose in a small brook, decides to venture out in search of the sea and to learn about life in other parts of the world. At each phase of the journey he sees something new, faces threats, acquires awareness and is proud of his wise decision. In one part small fishes join him, but when caught in the pelican's pouch, they blame him for having tricked them; and beg the enemy to let them kill him in exchange for their lives. Later he meets a wise lizard, who encourages him to not be afraid, arms him with a small dagger to use whenever he is in danger, and tells him about a team of fishes who have joined forces and work together to save themselves whenever they are caught in fishermen's nets. The Little Black Fish finally reaches the sea and decides to join the team of fishes; thinking about what he has accomplished: "I might face death any minute now But I should try not to put myself in harms' way as long as I can live. Of course, it is not important if I die, because this will happen anyway. I know my purpose, my purpose is: how will my life or death impact the lives of others." A seagull catches The Little Black Fish, he sees a tiny fish inside his stomach, cuts a hole with his dagger and saves him before saving himself. The grandmother and all others sleep. But a Little Red Fish could not close her eyes even for one second. All through the night she was thinking about the sea.

5 out of 5 stars An Eloquent New Translation of a Beloved Persian Tale, By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) , April 22, 2009
By Grady Harp
One of the more popular Persian childrens stories, The Little Black Fish was written well over a quarter of a century ago by Samad Beh-Rang. Now, thanks to Ruby Emams beautiful new translation accompanied by the stunning paintings by Arien Walizadeh that serve to illustrate this story, The Little Black Fish is bound to become a staple in the childrens literature in this country. Not that the book is confined to the shelves marked for childrens books: this is a fable that holds powerful metaphors for the adult reader also. The little black fish is discontent to remain in the moonless dark of his overprotective mother and yearns to discover the origin of the brook in which they live. His inquisitive nature and his longing for knowledge and adventure initiates his journey down the brook, a journey that introduces him to the dangers of the world outside, the transient figures that would prevent his search of lifes beginning - monsters such as a terrified crab, the desertion of his friends who fear the consequences of such a journey, the prejudice of a frog and tadpoles, and the threat of being consumed by the floppy lower beak of a pelican. Into his life come visits with people and animals outside his aqueous environment, the moon who informs him of the intention of mankind to travel from the earth to the moon, and encounters that allow him roles of bravery and leadership. Stories such as The Little Black Fish prove that childrens literature at the global level can at times provide more insight into life as we adults are living it. The lessons presented here are important in Emams fine translation are offered in a trusting and loving manner. The book is written for Ages 8+, but there are portions of the narrative that may be beyond the vocabulary of 8 year olds. No fear, pauses and explanations by adult readers in these portions may just emphasize concepts equally important to the more knowledgeable adult reader - and it seems as though Emam has that in mind. This is a lovely little book, both in content, in its English translation and in the beautiful design and art in which it is shared.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, April 10, 2009

A great story for almost anyone. What a beautiful mind the author has. The question is: How many can follow the path of The Little Black Fish in the struggle against poverty, ignorance, lack of freedom and justice? One (A Little Red Fish)out of a population of 11,999 fishes seems to be a good figure according to Mr. Samad Beh-Rang,considering the difficulty of the task. Let us hope we will some day be that little red fish.

5 out of 5 stars How many lessons can a book contain?, April 8, 2009

Obervation of the environment. Why get rid of those who think differently? Diversity and tolerance for others. Importance of awareness, and experience. Do not blame others for the miserable conditions, CHANGE THEM. The shepherd boy: an example of child labor. Hard living conditions for village women. Guns, violence and animal cruelty. Importance of teamwork. When in danger find a solution, betrayal and desperate measures will backfire. Put interests of others before your own. Conviction and determination will change ones life and those of others. A beach, no matter how dim, still sheds light.
