Review

"[R]eflects the unusually high standards of Civil War military history."

Publisher's note

A prize-winning historian reveals how Abraham Lincoln managed the men who ran the naval side of the Civil War and transformed himself into one of the greatest naval strategists of his age, in a unique and riveting account of the commander-in-chief during the Civil War.

Annotation

In histories of the Civil War, the Navy often takes second place to the Army. Craig L. Symonds, a professor emeritus at the U.S. Naval Academy and author of several naval histories, helps correct this bias in LINCOLN AND HIS ADMIRALS. At the beginning of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln stumbled as he oversaw the re-supply of Fort Sumter, but he grew as a commander-in-chief as the war continued. Symonds examines Lincoln’s relationships with Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, David G. Farragut, and the other top naval commanders and his management of these very different personalities. When necessary, Lincoln would handle command of naval operations directly. Indeed, Symonds credits Lincoln with the naval strategy that allowed the capture of Norfolk.
