Opening with her signature song, "Lili Marlene," in both English and the original German, the anthology goes on to cover Dietrich's Hollywood years into the mid-'40s. While the popular image of Marlene Dietrich-eternally black and white, with a cigarette in one hand as she sorrowfully talk-sings such mordant classics as "Falling In Love Again" and "Illusions"-doesn't always jibe with the reality of the cabaret singer who also tackled "Surrey with the Fringe On Top," both sides of Dietrich's musical personality are shown here. While more of her French and German language material would make this a more balanced overview, the relative rarities included here should make this of interest to all but the most diehard Dietrich fans.
