Album DescriptionCNK frontman/co-founder Nicolas St. Morand, aka Mr. Hreidmarr, is an ex-member of a French black metal band called Anorexia Nervosa, but Hymne a la Joie is not black metal per se even though black metal is one of CNK's many influences -- and make no mistake: this 2006/2007 recording does have a lot of different influences. Hymne a la Joie is best described as alternative metal and industrial metal with extreme vocals (St. Morand's harsh, larynx-shredding vocal style is somewhere between a black metal rasp and metalcore screaming), dramatic hints of Euro-classical/opera icon Richard Wagner and a strong appreciation of Germany's Rammstein and the Slovenian industrial band Laibach. CNK (whose name stands for the Cosa Nostra Klub) clearly loves Laibach's faux-military, mock-fascist imagery -- and like Laibach, CNK does it in such an ironic way that you know they are mocking and ridiculing fascism rather than promoting it (well, people who comprehend irony know that -- some simpletons have taken Laibach way out of context over the years much like the politically correct types who were offended by Chris Kattan's Gay Hitler character on Saturday Night Live). But Hymne a la Joie is much heavier and a lot more abrasive than Laibach, although CNK shares Laibach's strong sense of groove. Sensory assault is part of the game plan on Hymne a la Joie, but so is the desire to provide a rhythmically infectious groove. When Hymne a la Joie came out in the United States in late 2007, industrial rock was not as popular as it had been in the heyday of Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, the Revolting Cocks, and KMFDM.
