Although it's titled like one, Peter Case's 12th full-length, LET US NOW PRAISE SLEEPY JOHN, is not an official tribute record to the blues great Sleepy John Estes, but an album composed of mostly original songs (and a cover of "Get Away Blues" by Robert Wilkins) that reads like a tribute to the spirit of Estes's music. Case, like Estes, is a stylistic master who has lived a life on the musical fringe, and LET US NOW PRAISE SLEEPY JOHN feels like a lament for underappreciated musical genius/loner types everywhere. They have no better spokesperson than Case, who is in great voice across the album's 12 tracks and has never had better material. Richard Thompson cameos on "Every 24 Hours."
