Review

No Depression (p.121) - "[T]here's a cinematic sweep to LET IT ROLL....With majestic imagery and slow builds leading to powerful third-act scenes amidst the layers of strings, keys, mandolin, trumpet, and seemingly anything else within reach."

Title Note

Willard Grant Conspiracy: Robert Fisher, Jason Victor (acoustic guitar); Josh Hillman (viola); Yuko Murata (grand piano); Erik Van Loo (double bass); Tom King (drums).

Additional personnel: Zach Macko, Esther Sprikkelman, Linda Pitmon, Mary Lorson, Steve Wynn, Blake Hazard (vocals); David Michael Curry (guitar); Robert Lloyd (mandolin); Dennis Cronin (accordion); Chris Eckman (organ); Jeff Lipton (sequencer).

While usually contained in the studio, Boston's Willard Grant Conspiracy have always let the sprawling, collective nature of their sound loose on stage. On their sixth full-length, LET IT ROLL, the band finally lets their hair down. Recorded in the middle of a European tour, the album captures Robert Fisher and Co.'s more epic tendencies with 10 rollicking, live-informed tracks--most of which clock in way above the five-minute mark. While the band's many instruments swirl, Robert Fisher centers the grandiosity with his rough but elegant baritone, which recalls vintage Jerry Jeff Walker. The set includes a cover of Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man" and the haunting "Flying Low," a track co-written by Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate.
