Title Note

Bottle Rockets: Robert Kearns (bass); Brian Henneman, Tom Parr, Mark Ortmann.

The Bottle Rockets' fourth release, LEFTOVERS, features eight songs recorded during the sessions for the band's previous release, 24 HOURS A DAY. From the rousing opening track "Get Down River," which was featured on the PBS television series "The Mississippi: River of Song," to the haunting acoustic ballad "Skip's Song," it's clear the Bottle Rockets excel on the storytelling end of songwriting. Singer Brian Henneman's voice remains pure barroom. When he coyly sings, "are these your cigarettes?" on ""If Walls Could Talk" you get the feeling he's asked this question many, many times over the years. Whether the band is holding steady with mid-tempo rockers or raving it up as they do on "Dinner Train to Dutchtown" and "Coffee Monkey," the Bottle Rockets' roots-rock sound remains as comfortable as an old rocking chair.

REVEIWS:

CMJ (1/25/99, p.24) - "...borrows stylistically from honky-tonk and bluegrass music for inspiration, utilizing traditional country instruments like slide guitar, mandolin, fiddle and upright bass to contrast the commerical Nashville sound....the Bottle Rockets create music that any fan of country purity won't be able to resist..."
