After her half-sister, Tanya Donelly, left Throwing Muses to pursue her own career in the early 1990s, songwriter Kristin Hersh kept the Muses alive while also regularly releasing albums recorded under her own name. Her solo work departs from the Muses in a few important ways; while the lyrics are still poetic and fractured, the music is more orderly and composed, and performed almost completely single-handedly by Hersh. While electric instruments appear, an acoustic, folk-based guitar is the dominant sound. In addition to releasing solo albums and touring and performing with Throwing Muses, Hersh also sings, writes, and plays in the punky 50 Foot Wave.
