Review

Q (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "All flashy guitars and dazzling dual-vocal harmonies, their fourth album is an unashamed tilt at the big time..."
Alternative Press (p.165) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he arena-ready anthem 'Honor' features a Pantera-esque groove that will undoubtedly get pits moving..."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.46) - "There are horns, thrashy riffs, fist-punching stomps and the odd sampled beep-bop beat....Years on the road have given this five-piece not only the will to succeed, but perhaps most importantly, the will to evolve."

After making their bones on the indie label Victory, 2007 found Atreyu poised to dive into the mainstream. These veterans of the metalcore scene made their major label debut with LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR. For production duties, Atreyu recruited Goldfinger vocalist John "Feldy" Feldmann to helm the boards. Thrashy, grooving riffs dominate "Honor" and lead-off track "Doomsday; classic 1980s thrash metal rears its head on "Blow"; while early Slayer gets an obvious nod on the sinister-sounding "Becoming the Bull." LEAD SAILS, however, is as melodically sensitive a statement as it is a sonically powerful one, a notion perhaps best evidenced by the Green Day-channeling "Falling Down."

Atreyu is usually categorized as a metalcore act, but the group's facility with melodic hooks on LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR proves that they are not far removed from the pop-influenced punkster tradition of their native Orange, California as followed by bands like NOFX and the Offspring. The singalong choruses of "Honor," "Becoming the Bull," and "No One Cares" indicate that Atreyu might be just as suitable for radio play as headbanging.

But don't relegate the band to the Top 40 yet, because Atreyu play harder and with more ferocity than ever on LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR. Razor-sharp riffage, pummeling drums, and hair-raising screamo vocals are still Atreyu's stock in trade, and they unleash their sonic arsenal here with no mercy. The combination of memorable tunes with no-nonsense contemporary metal makes the album a keeper.
