A collection of performances by the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir, recorded by Marcel Cellier, and originally released on Cellier records. The English translation of the title is "The Mystery Of Bulgarian Voices."
Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares is known as The Bulgarian Women's Choir in the U.S. only.
This album by the National Radio and Television Chorus of Bulgaria was one of the sleeper hits of the late '80s (although its success came as no surprise to old-timers who remembered the underground vogue for the Congolese "Missa Luba" in the '60s). The traditional music here--all-female vocals, mostly a cappella--splits the difference between early European plainsong and Middle Eastern folk music, and as a result, the harmonies seem both familiar and exotic--and ultimately thrilling. Several sequels followed.
