In 2005, the Concretes garnered a whole new set of fans when the US department-store chain Target used the Swedish band's wonderfully catchy "Say Something New" in a stylish ad campaign. Wisely, the Concretes' label, Astralwerks, quickly followed up with LAYOURBATTLEAXEDOWN, a collection of the ensemble's earlier B-sides and rarities. The result is a surprisingly cohesive offering that, like the group's self-titled 2004 disc, is filled with charming, brightly shimmering indie-pop made all the fizzier by Victoria Bergsman's amiable Mazzy Star/Cardigans-inspired vocals. The gently swaying "Forces" sets the tone here, as the compilation moves back and forth from various older EP tracks to other previously unreleased songs. One of the set's highlights proves to be an inventive cover of the Rolling Stones' "Miss You," which dispenses with the original's disco vibe, in favor of a spare, subdued mood. An excellent companion piece to THE CONCRETES, the collection reveals that this band had honed its pop-perfect sound long before it was discovered by the mainstream.
