Phish Artist Snapshot:

Of all the jam bands to emerge in the late-1980s and early-'90s, Phish were widely regarded as the inheritors to the Grateful Dead's throne. While the group's jazzy, mercurial sound was more progressive and light-hearted than the Dead's, Phish's massive, adoring following modeled themselves after the vagabond Dead Heads, calling themselves "Phish Heads." After letting off steam through various side projects (Oysterhead, Vida Blue) and sabbaticals, Phish finally called it quits in 2004.

LAWN BOY was difficult for fans to track down for a couple of years after its initial release, because its distributor went out of business almost immediately after its 1989 release. However, by the time Elektra reissued the album (along with its self-released predecessor JUNTA), Phish were already budding superstars on the nascent jam band circuit. Ironically, however, this obscure indie release is musically far more mainstream than the group's eventual major-label debut, A PICTURE OF NECTAR. Perhaps wanting to showcase a different side of the band than the loose, jam-oriented JUNTA, LAWN BOY primarily consists of skewed pop songs with quirky lyrics, like "Bouncing Around the Room." However, the album also includes the 12-minute epic "Reba," a longtime fan favorite that was one of Phish's most popular improvisational launching pads.
