With a funky old-school hip-hop sensibility and a distinctive, insistent growl out of Chicago blues, Lyrics Born is one of the most instantly disarming MCs to hit the underground. Originally dubbed Asia Born, the Bay Area rapper (born Tom Shimura) switched to Lyrics Born by 1995 to downplay his heritage. One of the co-founders and original recording artists of Solesides Records (which would evolve into the juggernaut Quannum label), Lyrics Born worked the hip-hop universe diligently for over a decade, and his patience paid off with 2003's LATER THAT DAY, the first of many critically feted LPs.
