Review

Rolling Stone (9/3/98, p.101) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...Mould...revisits his past on THE LAST DOG & PONY SHOW....Blending Sugar's hard pop with the rueful confessions of his solo efforts, Mould has fashioned a passionate tribute to his twenty years in music..."
Entertainment Weekly (8/14/98, p.81) - "...He continues to issue scruffy anthems...brawling quirks...folkie tendencies, and noisey guitar-attack aeshetics--in short, the Bob Mould sound. An invigorating blast from one who has stood the test of time." - Rating: B+

Title Note

Initial pressings of THE LAST DOG AND PONY SHOW include a limited edition disc containing an interview with Bob Mould.

Personnel: Bob Mould (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, samples, programming); Alison Chesley (cello); Matt Hammon (drums); Jim Wilson (samples).

Recorded at Cedar Creek, Austin, Texas and Meridian, Boerne, Texas.

From his days with Husker Du and Sugar, Bob Mould has made a career of setting the poetry of quiet rage to gliding melodies and stormy musical backdrops. Solo, his poems are generally set further in relief, and THE LAST DOG AND PONY SHOW finds him fleshing out his tales of despair in a familiar band setting. With solid, straightforward arrangements, Mould manages, as ever, to strike a perfect balance between his graceful words and the heavy stomp of his musical accompaniment.

The dolorous repetition of "New #1's" melody sets the stage for the intentful rage of its lyric. The proceedings accelerate and become heavier as the albums crashes through the liberating "Moving Trucks" (which features a disarmingly hopeful lyric) and the close harmonies and all-out rock thrash of "Taking Everything." "First Drag Of The Day" features a bit of sonic experimentation and choppy, grinding arrangement. A look back to Mould's more easy going, acoustic-based work is seen in the slow, contemplative "Who Was Around?" and the confessional "Vaporub."
