Review

Option (1-2/96, p.123) - "...mutant country-rock that's somewhere between a lark and lost cause. As long as they stay on the goofy side of the equation, the music's equally fun and forgettable..."
Alternative Press (1/96, p.93) - "...COWBOY is a record by drinkers, for drinkers and about drinkers....the Wacos are in it purely for the kicks, and, by avoiding most contemporary indie rockers schticky take on `country,' they've produced the perfect record for Saturday night's PBR party."

Product note

Full title: ...To The Last Dead Cowboy.
The Waco Brothers: Jon Langford, Dean Schlabowske (guitar, vocals); Tracy Dear (mandolin, vocals); Tommy Ray (bass); Steve Goulding (drums).
Additional personnel: Jane Baxter Miller, Iggy Yoakam (vocals); Mark Durante (steel guitar); Dave Crawford (accordion); Alan Doughty (bass).
Recorded at Kingsize, Chicago, Illinois.
Long enamored of no-nonsense country music, Mekons singer/songwriter Jon Langford left his British punk roots behind to form what the cover of the Waco Brothers' debut album unabashedly proclaims as "the world's tuffest country band." Langford and company were no bandwagon jumpers, though--country music had played a part in the Mekon's music as well.
On LAST DEAD COWBOY, though, the Wacos embrace (and define) the country-punk aesthetic wholeheartedly, pounding out aggressive, socially conscious honky-tonk tunes with raw rock & roll energy and a winning sense of humor. As subsequent Wacos efforts would venture into other areas of roots music, DEAD COWBOY is the most country-oriented album in their catalog.
