Review

Down Beat (12/00, p.88) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Spann tickles the ivories with a stately kind of world-weariness..."
Dirty Linen (4-5/01, p.82) - "...Historically important...his last whack at some of the numbers with which he's been identified over the years..."
Living Blues (11-12/00, p.81) - "...Documents a Boston club date that occurred 3 weeks before Spann's death...in April 1970....The most successful tracks are 2 songs from Muddy's repertoire..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Otis Spann (piano); Lucille Spann (vocals); Luther "Snake" Johnson, Peter Malick, Ted Parkins, Richard Ponte.

Recorded live on April 2, 1970.

While never an innovator, pianist/singer Otis Spann was there at the births of both the classic Chicago blues sound and rock & roll. In the '50s and '60s, Spann was in Muddy Waters' band, played and recorded with Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, and on early singles by Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. The well-recorded LAST CALL captures one of his last performances before his death, at Boston's legendary music club the Boston Tea Party.

His voice has much of the raspy midnight growl of Muddy Waters, and his piano style is unique: rich in sound (the notes sound like they're dripping from his fingers like honey) but without a hint of unnecessary flash or a wasted note. Also featured here is the soul voice of Spann's wife Lucille, who sounds like a cross between Koko Taylor and Aretha Franklin. LAST CALL should definitely be caught by those smitten with the Chicago style in general, and blues piano fans in particular.
