With its two extra tracks, 12-page booklet, and mini poster, this dub remix of the Gorillaz full-length debut functions both as a stand-alone work and a fascinating expansion of the original album. It features the same roster of guest stars as the original (including Tina Weymouth, Terry Hall, and Miho Hatori) but has a stronger emphasis on the dubwise tip. Tracks such as the opening "Jungle Fresh" recall the smokier, more, uh, experimental side of Lee Perry, while the melodica-laced "Banana Baby" is elliptical and sinuous. LAIKA COME HOME is heavy on dubbed-up echo, reverse tapes, and synthetic one-drop reggae beats--and you don't have to have listened to the original to appreciate its off-kilter appeal. There's less emphasis on the pop hooks of the original GORILLAZ album, more on its trippy, open-ended space-reggae sound--all to the good in this hazy, beat-happy melange of pop-meets-heavy-dub.
