Magnet (p.112) - "Stewart reverts to aggressive experimentalist mode here, layering his abrasive guitar with an assortment of oddball, arrhythmic sounds from celestas, bells and oboes. It's an approach perfectly suited to songs about rage and frustration."

Title Note

Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart sings like he's just had the wind knocked out of him, and that's the visceral feeling he's going for on much of 2005's LA FORET. In the bizarrely imagined world of California's Xiu Xiu, lo-fi folk mixes with glitchy synth-pop and jarring noise-rock for a dark concoction that gets poured into the shape of songs bearing titles such as "Muppet Face" and "Mousey Toy." Both tracks sound like they are being sung by someone on the verge of mental collapse, with the former's urgent electronica colliding sharply with the latter's nervous minimalism. And so it goes with the wholly unpredictable LA FORET, which veers from the elegiac "Rose of Sharon" to the swirling, frenetic "Bog People." Like Xiu Xiu itself, the record is never easy on the ears, but it is undeniably fascinating.
