Like other compilers of Late Antiquity, Macrobius has long been considered a minor author, and this despite the over thirty editions of his works published between 1472 and 1597. He served as an essential link between the idealized Antiquity and the Republic of Letters, where all humanistic libraries possessed his works as a treasure chest of classical culture. His chapters on myth, allegory, dreams, and Virgilian style were essential reading, while his two main works, the Commentary on the Dream of Scipio and the Saturnalia allow an understanding of the significance of Virgil in his thought. These pieces resonate with the greatest problems of the Renaissance, of imitation and the poet's status as a philosopher and theologian.
